Dear fan of The Giovanni Consort,
If you were able to get to the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery on Sunday, thank you very much for your attendance at our 2014 Season Launch. We hope you enjoyed our little teaser of the music to come this year, as well as hearing about our plans for 2014 and enjoying the wonderful canapés created by our team of singers/chefs! If you were unable to join us on Sunday, fear not - below is a summary of our plans for this year. If you missed out, please contact us for a copy of our 2014 Season Brochure and a copy of the 2014 Subscription and Patronage form, both of which will provide you with information about our 2014 season and how you can support this Consort this year.
2014 Concerts
We will once again be presenting four concerts this year. We look forward to welcoming Warren Trevelyan-Jones for our first concert on the 16th of May. Amongst many other groups, Warren has sung with The Sixteen and The Tallis Scholars, and is now Head of Music at St James Church in Sydney, as well as Director of The Parsons Affayre and Co-Director of The Consort of Melbourne. He will conduct The Giovanni Consort in a program featuring a selection of Spanish Renaissance works contrasted with new Australian compositions by Brooke Shelley and Joseph Twist.
Our second concert will be held by candlelight at Christ Church, Claremont. Christophe Karas, the church's current Director of Music, will direct The Giovanni Consort in an eclectic programme featuring Morten Lauridsen's gorgeous O Magnum Mysterium, Antonio Lotti's hauntingCrucifixus, and Francis Poulenc's rarely-performed Quatre Petites prières de Saint-François d'Assise.
The Consort's Artistic Director, Lucien Fischer, conducts the third concert at Swanbourne's Church of the Resurrection which will commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of World War One. Using Josquin Des Prez's Missa 'L'homme armé' and Francisco Guerrero's Missa de la Batalla Escoutez as a framework, this concert will explore repertoire that deals with themes of conflict and loss, and peace and resolution, including Edward Elgar's They Are at Rest, Robert Pearsall's Lay a Garland, and Herbert Howells' Take him, earth, for cherishing.
Kristin Bowtell will make his Giovanni Consort conducting debut in our fourth and final concert at the Government House Ballroom. We're thrilled to be presenting the Australian Premiere of (and become only the seventh choir worldwide to perform) Joby Talbot's Path of Miracles, an epic work written for 17 individual voices that was commissioned and performed by the English choir Tenebrae in 2004. If you would like to find out more about the work, visit Tenebrae's website here.

Inaugural Composition Competition
The Consort will shortly be launching an inaugural composition competition. Local composers will have a chance to submit an original choral work in August to be judged by a panel of professional composers. Finalists will have their piece workshopped by The Consort, and the winner will receive a cash prize and have their work performed in our third concert in September. You will receive another email when we launch the competition, and details will also be up on our website and Facebook page at that time.
Combined concert with John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School
The Consort will join the St Paul's Chapel Choir at JSR to present a program of moving works from the 20th century, including Gerald Finzi'sLo, the full final sacrifice, Jean Langlais' Messe Solennelle, and William Walton's Coronation Te Deum. This concert is part of the St Paul's Chamber Series - you can view the online brochure for the serieshere. Tickets are $12/$8 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 9247 2242.
