Concert 4 - Weihnachtshistorie

Concert 4 - Weihnachtshistorie

The Giovanni Consort completes their 2013 Concert Series with Heinrich Schütz's Weihnachts-Historie, or Christmas Story. Schütz is often considered to be the most important German composer before JS Bach, and his polychoral style echoes the music of both Gabrieli and Monteverdi and the compositional style of the Netherlands school.

Just sixteen singers will perform both solo and choral parts in this masterwork, joined by a chamber orchestra of some of Perth's finest early music specialists. The program will also feature traditional German carols, and choral miniatures from the period.

Concert 1 - Sonorum

Wednesday 15 May @ 7:30pm, Christ Church, Cnr Queenslea Drive and Stirling Highway, Claremont
The programme centres around the Howells 'Requiem' (1936) and pieces by contemporary American composer, Eric Whitacre - his 'Nox Aurumque' (2009) which inhabits a dark, richly coloured, and beautiful tonal landscape. 'Nox Aurumque' in particular, deals with the 'weaving' of light and gold - and the 'singing' of night. It is a biting but beautiful musical setting which is built around complex contemporary harmony, which is 'weaved' with soaring vocal lines. Contrasting these, is Britten's remarkable setting of 'Hymn to St Cecilia' (1942) which we perform in his 100th anniversary year.

Music  includes: Herbert Howells RequiemBenjamin Britten Hymn to St. CeciliaEric Whitacre Nox Arumque

Conducted by Christophe Karas
