2014 marks the 19th year since The Giovanni Consort was founded, and during that time the group has become renowned across perth for its exquisite performances of all kinds of music from the medieval period right through to the present day. The Consort prides itself on presenting diverse and engaging musical programs that appeal to everyone. Audiences will be able to enjoy new interpretations of their choral favourites, but will also be exposed to pieces of music that they’ve never heard before, whether they be little-known works from hundreds of years ago, or newly-composed works from some of Perth’s young composers. The Consort is based around a core group of approximately 10 singers, but depending on the demands of the repertoire, the size of the group will increase or decrease throughout the year. The group’s singers have extensive backgrounds in vocal and/or instrumental music, with many having studied (or still studying) music at a tertiary level. Additionally, several current members can be regularly heard in competitions, recitals and productions around Perth.
The Giovanni Consort has always acted as a training ground for aspiring professional musicians. Former members of the Consort, including sopranos Rachelle Durkin, Katja Webb, and Taryn Fiebig; tenor Stuart Haycock; baritone Andrew Moran; bass Luke Gabbedy; and composer Iain Grandage have all gone on to develop successful music careers interstate and overseas. The Consort has also traditionally provided enthusiastic and dedicated young musicians with opportunities to extend themselves and gain experience in a challenging environment, and 2014 will be no different as the group continues to welcomes new singers and conductors to its ranks.
The Consort relies entirely on ticket sales and the generosity of its patrons and subscribers to pay for the numerous costs associated with presenting a concert, including venue hire, catering, publicity, music, and remuneration for singers and conductors. We hope that you may consider making a financial contribution to support the Consort’s ongoing work in 2014, and we look forward to seeing you at some of our concerts this year!
